We are a small working group concerned with transport and its effect on the environment. It was created early in 2009 as part of the Dacorum Environmental Forum, a body set up by Dacorum Borough Council as the result of Government legislation in the early nineties in order to involve the community in addressing environmental issues in the Borough.

We meet four times a year to discuss any transport related issues which will affect people in the Dacorum area.

One way to help the environment is to share a lift. There is a web site for this where you can register your journey and whether you want a lift or are offering a lift, or both.

We would be particularly grateful for any suggestions which are transport related and would improve the environment. Please email Dennis Harvey with these suggestions.

Journey Planner
This is an excellent web site for planning any journey in the south-east: it includes trains (over-ground and under-ground), buses, coaches, and even walking and cycling.
It is very good at suggesting alternative means of travel, of which one was not aware.
It even has a text facility to get the times of the next public transport at a particular stop.

Cycling

For people who wish to find out more about cycling issues and developments in Dacorum or would like to join a local group for occasional recreational rides and other events, please go to tbcc.org.uk

Cycle routes and lanes
These fall under the county cycling strategy: here is a link to the information on the county web site. It seems that cycle paths in rural area are thought detrimental to the environment and that any lighting for such paths would be detrimental to light pollution. The extra resources to build these paths is also considered to be contrary to sustainability. The recommended strategy appears to be for cyclists to use existing carriageways.

Our next committee meeting is on Monday 12th September.
