A crucial aspect of material waste resulting from the provision of goods and services is the energy used in their production, transport, running/maintenance and eventual disposal. One of The Waste Group's objectives is to give presentations to the wider Forum and the Council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee on the subject of what is known as "Life Cycle Analysis", in the context of the British Standard Institute's recently launched standard PAS 2050, drawing material from the report "Sustainable Energy Without the Hot Air" by David MacKay.
PAS 2050 is a publicly available specification for assessing product life cycle Greenhouse Gas emissions, prepared by BSI British Standards and co-sponsored by the Carbon Trust and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
